"Two Tailed" Canadian Cents Surface Canadian Penny
Errors Only Two Known
September 17th, 2001
In the wake of the recent discovery and sale of the first
authenticated "Two Tailed" United States coin, two "Two Tailed" 1980
Canadian cents have surfaced and been certified by the Professional Coin
Grading Service (PCGS). One of the specimens is currently being
auctioned online on eBay.
The two "Two Tailed" 1980 Canadian Cents
were recently acquired by Mike Byers Incoration from a Canadian
coin dealer specializing in error coins. Both of these were recently
authenticated, certified and graded Mint State 64 Red by PCGS. Both "Two
Tailed" coins were struck with two reverse dies.
According to
Byers, the only other known "Two Tailed" coin is a U.S. quarter which sold
last month for $80,000. After 20 years, these are the only two
examples that have surfaced.
For reference purposes, the reverse
die on side "A" is slightly misaligned and has an extremely high wire rim.
The reverse die on side "B" is rotated approximately 100º.
After
being certified by PCGS, Fred Weinberg, a well known Mint Error dealer,
purchased the other specimen from the Byers Numismatic
Corporation.
The specimen being offered is considered a World Class
Mint Error and would be the centerpiece of a major
collection.
This 1980 Canadian "Two Tailed" Cent is currently
listed on eBay and is immediately available for $30,000.
